Every year on 15 August, Greece marks one of its biggest national celebrations – and Thassos is no exception. It’s a day full of tradition, community spirit and plenty of reasons to join in.

What’s Going On With 15 August?
In Greece, 15 August marks the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, also called the Assumption. The Orthodox Church commemorates Mary’s “falling asleep” and ascent - though it’s not a sombre occasion at all, but a festive one that’s earned the nickname “Little Easter” or "dekapentavgoustos".
Folks up and down the country decorate their villages, throw street parties (panigiria), dance, eat and drink. It’s less about religious solemnity and more about community, tradition and a bit of summer joy.
On Thassos, the village of Panagia has a long-standing tradition of hosting the main celebration - village-wide festivities that bring locals and visitors together.
Things to Do on 15 August – Thassos Style
Each year, there’s plenty happening across the island. Events can vary, but here are the kinds of things you’ll often find on the day:
Open Air Market (Bazaar) in Panagia – browse local produce, crafts and snacks
Traditional Tavern Parties such as in Karas Restaurant – great for joining locals at the table with live music and dancing
Beach Bar Events in places like Karnagio, Natura and La Scala – from laid-back DJ sets to full-on parties
Cultural Exhibitions – past years have included sculpture displays, history-themed Playmobil sets, and even dinosaur shows for families
For the latest programme, check the Go-Thassos events page – it’s updated regularly with what’s happening around the island.
August 15 is more than a national day - it’s a chance to meet locals, taste homemade dishes, and join in what really feels like Greece’s ultimate mid-summer get-together. And on Thassos, there's no shortage of ways to do that, whether you’re after something relaxed or lively.
Happy planning!
